Homemade vinaigrettes: Simple, Delicious, and Healthy.

Homemade vinaigrettes are a wonderful addition to a cook’s repertoire. Not only are they a simple, delicious and healthy option, versus the store bought varieties, but they open the door to endless creative opportunities in the kitchen. The simple basics for any vinaigrette dressing is a great vinegar, olive oil and salt. From this simple formula there are an infinite number of possibilities.
Some of the key basic steps to master are the following:
Olive oil to vinegar Ratios: Traditionally a vinaigrette is made of 1 part vinegar and 3 parts olive oil. Part of the fun of crafting your own homemade version is that you can tweak this ratio to satisfy your own taste buds. Often people prefer a 1 to 2 part ratio vinegar to oil.
Balance Your Vinaigrette: Salt is an important basic ingredient in your homemade vinaigrette. It helps to temper the acidity of the vinegar and brings out flavors. A fine sea salt, kosher salt, or Himalayan salt works best to help provide your dressing with a clean finish. We recommend our artisan Himalayan Pink Sea Salt.
Emulsify: We all know oil and vinegar don’t mix, but you can get them to come pretty close. You can use either a whisk or a blender. Start by adding your salt to the vinegar and stir until it is dissolves, then slowly add your oil and whisk or blend until the mixture is well united. (You can also add a couple of drops of Dijon mustard to help keep the blend together.) Now it is ready to pour over your greens.
Now that you have the basics down feel free to add other elements such as herbs spices to the base to create your own delicious dressing. And try out one of Olio’s favorite vinaigrettes, our Simple Pomegranate Balsamic Salad Dressing:
- ¼ cup pomegranate balsamic vinegar
- ¼ cup Arbequina extra virgin olive oil
- Pinch of pepper
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of garlic powder
Mix ingredients in a bowl. Taste. (If you prefer, adjust quantities to your pallet’s liking!) Then drizzle over a salad (think spinach salad, feta cheese, sliced almonds & raisins). Best to drizzle a little, toss in with salad, then add more if necessary to ensure you don’t over-dress. Delicious.
